Kenward Elmslie (1929 – 2022) was a poet, librettist, novelist, publisher and performer. He published fifteen books of poetry, several plays, and a novel in addition to opera librettos and the books and lyrics for Broadway and off-Broadway musicals.

The grandson of Joseph Pulitzer, he founded the nonprofit small press and foundation Z Press, through which he provided professional and financial support for writers and artists. Bare Bones is Elmslie's prose poem remembrance of artist/writer Joe Brainard, written not long after Brainard's death in May, 1994.
