Guy Davenport
Flowers and Leaves: A Long Poem
Guy Davenport (1927-2005) was a widely-admired scholar, writer, translator, critic and visual artist. Many of Davenport's short stories incorporate historical figures; some are set in a Scandinavia reimagined as a sexual Utopia. His critical works include dozens of essays on poets, writers and painters, ancient and modern.
His translations of early Greek writers are widely taught. Flowers & Leaves, first published by the legendary Jargon Society in 1966, is dedicated to the memory of American composer Charles Ives. In this book-length poem Davenport displays the same mastery of collage and juxtaposition, the same acquaintance with both classical learning and Americana, the same weave of art and passion evidenced in the stories that would follow. With black and white "decorations" (Davenport's term) by the author.
